Someone once said if you wait to do everything until you’re sure it’s right, you’ll probably never do much of anything. Now, I’ve always known there was a natural order to things. What goes up almost always comes down. Darkness always leads to light. Winter always gives way to spring. And the sun always comes out after the rain.
There was rain in the forecast and upon looking out my window last Sunday, my thoughts immediately went to the bride. What was she thinking as the rain tapped on her window? What was her heart feeling? Was it filled with nervousness…joy…calm? I would never have let the bride and groom know it that day, but I was a nervous wreck! But there is an infinite place in one’s life for courage; to walk with confidence in spite of one’s fears. I met Michael and Luisa, a young and energetic couple, late last year after hearing that they were looking for a photographer to shoot their wedding. Me? Wow.
Now, I’m used to shooting musicians in their element; watching them captivate audiences as they hit those glass shattering high notes. I’m used to shooting the everyman…shooting strangers with my camera documenting life as it unfolds. I’m NOT, however, used to shooting weddings. I’ve captured love in the presence of a magistrate, offered help in telling a love story in a small southern town, even chronicled what some would call unconventional love — but for reasons I still can not fathom, this was different. As we sat at the dinner meeting, we spoke about many things over Applebee’s appetizers, glasses of wine and margaritas, but I couldn’t shake the feelings of trepidation. However, Michael and Luisa were quite the opposite. Reassuring, with thick layers of creamy compliments. It was up to me (and my 2nd and 3rd shooter) to tell their love story in way that was true to them. And with some encouragement from my family and photog friends, prayer, and a kiss and hug hello from the bride, it was on. I just hope I did them proud.
Thank you Michael and Luisa for trusting me with your day. Wishing you a wonderful beginning, and love to last a lifetime. Happy 7 day anniversary and congrats Mrs. Roche on your grad school graduation! You go, girl! Here are a few of my favs from Michael and Luisa’s day. And true to the natural order of things, the sun did come out after the rain!
